Pissouri in Cyprus is a traditional Cypriot village about half way between Limassol and Paphos. Positioned on a hill the village overlooks vineyards and is set against the back drop of the Troodas mountains. There are panoramic sea views over the clear blue Mediterranean Ocean that is only a short walk away at the foot of the hill. The village square has a couple of banks and several mini markets along with the usual car hire agency offices ect. Most of what you need for day to day living is available including a pharmacy and a petrol station. There is even a local police station in the village too giving Pissouri an air of a self contained community. There are plenty of tavernas and restaurants in the village as well as down on the beach area so you won’t go short of nourishment either. In fact you could spend a real relaxing holiday right there in the village without the need to venture anywhere else in Cyprus.

The shift starts 12 midnight exactly, our comrades woke us up at 11.45, and we struggle to our feet, sleep bacchanal, exhausted. Outside our ‘Nissen hut’ (Alu constructed structure, half-round regulated, utilized for accommodation and command), the wind is ululating over the plains, it makes me shiver to think to be on patrol after midnight. Famagusta is a city on the east coast of Cyprus and is capital of the Famagusta District. It is turned up in a bay between Capes Greco and Eloea, east of Nicosia, and possesses the deepest harbor in the island. Since the 1974 Turkish invasion the city has shacked in the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The older tourist quarter of Varosha is given up unfinished a settlement of the Cyprus dispute. The city has a population of around 39,000 and there are no court-ordered Greek Cypriot residents


The town has had antithetic names from its first cognized one of Arsinoe, then Ammonchostos (meaning “concealed in sand”) which evolved into Famagusta and the Turkish name of Gazimagusa. Two of the original gates of the Famagusta Castle, (the walls) still stand: Porta del Mare (The Sea Gate), and Ravalin / Akkule Bastion (The Land Gate). Two more gates were opened up during the British period, which are the Djanboulat Gate, and the New Gate

It is believed that the townsfolk of Lambousa, who were tired of the Arab attacks which began in the 7th Century, transferred their houses to the inner slopes of the mountain using the same stones carried from their old houses as building materials to construct Lapta. Settlement developed later, especially during the Lusignian period, with the population of Lapta rising to 10,000. But from the archaeological excavations that took place in the area, it was discovered that Lapta was not the first settlement established in this area. In addition to two Iron Age tomb chambers also being discovered, research shows that copper minning beds also seem to have been used and that settlement occurred there during a Catholic period (Neolithic Period.) The frivolous views down to the sea on the way up are disorienting, with the unsmooth island of Petra Tou Limniti in the foreground. It was on this island that Cyprus’s earliest inhabitants dwelt, and traces of a pre-neolithic settlement were happened there by the same Swedish expedition in the 1920s that excavated Vouni and Soli. The church houses some superb 12th century frescoes. Leave by postdating the sign for Pano Lefkara. A side trip to Dipotamos Dam, which is a democratic leaning site and where birdwatchers can often see dark storks and pelicans, goes from this road.
