The shift starts 12 midnight exactly, our comrades woke us up at 11.45, and we struggle to our feet, sleep bacchanal, exhausted. Outside our ‘Nissen hut’ (Alu constructed structure, half-round regulated, utilized for accommodation and command), the wind is ululating over the plains, it makes me shiver to think to be on patrol after midnight. In January the frozen winds blow from the Anatolian highlands across the Cyprus strait and covers the island with a blanket of stale. (more…)

Larnaca Cyprus. Something for Everyone
Larnaca in Cyprus could be depicted as the resort with everything. It’s a better municipality, a town and a holiday resort all turned over into one. It’s also home to the Islands main airport and and tout an enthusiastic selection of shops too. Lefkara Area – Cyprus
There is an extraordinary view from the little church of Archangelos in the field below the square.
The church houses some superb 12th century frescoes. Leave by postdating the sign for Pano Lefkara. A side trip to Dipotamos Dam, which is a democratic leaning site and where birdwatchers can often see dark storks and pelicans, goes from this road. The main route follows the one-way system through the bare streets of Pano Lefkara to the car park near the schools. (more…)

Larnaka West Coast – Cyprus
The octagonal mosque, built in 1816, is considered the finest example of Ottoman architecture in Cyprus. the Tekke and its grounds have been completely renovated. In winter, the Salt Lake, which is one of the two main wetlands in Cyprus, is home to colonies of flamingos and other migratory birds. He lake is below sea level and seawater seeping in through the porous lime rocks leaves a thick deposit of salt as it dries out. The Salt Lake is on the Ramsar list as a wetland of international importance. Leave the Tekke, double back round the airport roundabout and follow the signs for Kiti.
