The Pentadactylos Mountains began to emerge eleven million years ago at the end of the Miocene era, but the Mesaoria appeared much later, during the Pleistocene Age, a million years ago. Today, the Troodos massif, a bulky range with the 1951m Mount Olympus at its peak, dominates the south of the island. It consists of igneous rock and pillow lavas originally formed from molten rock beneath the 8,000- metre deep ocean that ocean separated the continents of Eurasia and Afro-Arabia. Limassol in Cyprus was one of the first purpose built beach holiday resorts in the Mediterranean. Up until that time there was no such thing as a beach resort holiday. In fact the rich and famous of the day spent their holidays in luxury hotels up in the Troodas mountains to escape the summer heat. The first thing that strikes visitors to Limassol is the sheer size of the place. The sea front area with its bars, restaurants and shops stretches for miles. There is a modern marina at one end and the Limassol port and old town area at the other. With more top notch hotels and apartment complexes than you can shake a stick at there is no shortage of quality accommodation either. However there is a whole lot more to the town of Limassol than its role as a great Cyprus holiday resort. (more…)

Varosha is in a UN zone between the Republic of Cyprus and what is known as a Turkish occupied area. It is the tourist area of Famagusta, which is located in the northern third of Cyprus. This little town is a no mans land where neither Greeks nor Turks are allowed to go. In short, it is a ghost town. Not so long ago this area used to be very different.
Varosha was the Greek quarter of Famagusta. It used to be a bustling town where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots worked side by side happily. There were hotels being built to handle the tourist traffic. In all, there were 36 hotels that accounted for half of the bed spaces in Cyprus. Famagusta also had nurseries, museums, and art galleries. There were primary, secondary, and private schools. (more…)

Those who knew Bellapais before the 1950s speak disparagingly of the encroaching commercialisation of the abbey. There are indeed a handful of cafes and souvenir shops beside the abbey, and even a restaurant inside it, but they can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and the narrow streets of the village will scarcely permit more than this. Parking can sometimes be a little tricky as a result, though there is also a large open parking area just beyond the abbey. Beware of sitting under the famous âTree of Idlenessâ, an ancient mulberry by the abbey entrance, lest you are struck down with the indolence for which the villagers are famed. Bellapais, Durrell was told, was synonymous with laziness and the villagers lived for so long that even the gravedigger was out of a job. (more…)

Name
The term Mediterranean derives from the Latin word mediterraneus, meaning “in the middle of earth” (medius, “middle” + terra, “land, earth”). This is either due to the sea being surrounded by land (especially compared to the Atlantic Ocean) or that it was at the centre of the known world. The Greek name is Mesogeios (), “inland, interior” (from , “middle” + , “land, earth”). (more…)
