Lapta -cyprus

It is believed that the townsfolk of Lambousa, who were tired of the Arab attacks which began in the 7th Century, transferred their houses to the inner slopes of the mountain using the same stones carried from their old houses as building materials to construct Lapta. Settlement developed later, especially during the Lusignian period, with the population of Lapta rising to 10,000. But from the archaeological excavations that took place in the area, it was discovered that Lapta was not the first settlement established in this area. In addition to two Iron Age tomb chambers also being discovered, research shows that copper minning beds also seem to have been used and that settlement occurred there during a Catholic period (Neolithic Period.)

A symbol of the City- the Bapnar Source

Today’s Lapta is one of the Greenest and productice corners of Cyprus and is full of citrus groves.the richness of the city owers its wealth to the Bapnar water source, which is situated 280 meters above the slopes. This source is one of two water sources one the island that flows without interruption all year round. Today’s remnants of the historical city of Lambousa on the coast include its city walls, stone tombs, apart from being pillaged for centuries by grave robbers, were used in the Middle-Ages as a stone quarry. Adjacent to the port are rugger fish pools burrowed out of the rocks during the Roman era, that are the oldest example of their type, which were used by fisherman to keep their catches constantly fresh. There are canals that allow cool clean water to replace the warm and dirty water during the tide. Some people argue that these pools are of the early Byzantine era and some say that they belonged to the baths of a Roman villa. The archaeological excavations in Lambousa that began in 1992 continue today.
